Imphal: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government is scared of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who raises the issue of Modi-Adani relationship in the Parliament.

MPCC President K Meghachandra while addressing the media at a press meet held at Congress Bhawan here on Saturday charged the BJP government of awarding jail term for the whistle-blowers and reward for the fraudsters.

He reacted to the recent verdict of a Surat court that sentenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years of imprisonment, contending that the conviction was a well-planned strategy of the BJP government to silence the Congress leader from speaking the truth.

He said that the Modi government is protecting businessmen like Adani, Lalit Modi and Nirav Modi, who are allegedly involved in looting crores of public money deposited in the banks and LIC.

Clarifying on the speech made by Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 election rally in Kerala, he said that the statement made by Rahul Gandhi was not against the Modi community and OBC but Lalit Modi and Nirav Modi who looted crores of public money by way of fraud. Modi is not even an OBC; however, allegations have been leveled against the Congress leader that he had insulted the OBC community, he added.

He also contended that the aim of the BJP government is in fact an attempt to remove secularism from the preamble of the constitution and to replace it with crony capitalism.

The ‘D’ for democracy will be replaced by dictatorship. None of the BJP leaders and those involved in fraud cases have been questioned by CBI, NIA, Income Tax or the ED while the Opposition leaders are being repeatedly attacked using those agencies on false allegations with an attempt to tarnish their
image. Such acts of the BJP government have made it clear that they are scared of the opposition party, he said.

Reacting against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as the MP of Lok Sabha right after the court verdict was announced, he said that Rahul Gandhi was disqualified without following any due procedure of the ECI guidelines and relevant provisions of the law.

The BJP government has defiled the law of the nation and scuttled democracy. In the Parliament, Rahul Gandhi simply questioned the Modi-Adani relationship. For the first time in the history of the country, the ruling BJP party staged a protest in the Parliament. The conviction of Rahul Gandhi is bizarre as it does not follow the guidelines and instructions of the constitution, he said.

He exuded confidence that the higher court will stay the verdict convicting Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party will fight the case legally and politically for the cause of democracy. The people’s voice will be raised and the fight for truth and non-violence will continue, he added.

Meanwhile, members of Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee staged a protest rally from Congress Bhawan till Raj Bhavan alleging the BJP government of indulging in ‘crony capitalism’. The protest rally was also taken out in solidarity with Rahul Gandhi.
