Imphal: At a time when the State is reeling under communal unrest, the Khurai Apunba Meira Lup has called a six-day Statewide general strike with effect from 4 pm of October 4 in protest against the alleged persecution and threat meted out to two Vice-Presidents of the group by some women.
Declaring the general strike call in a press release jointly issued by its President and Secretary, Khurai Apunba Meira Lup said that when Khurai Pana was enquired about the mass silent protest rally organised by Khurai Panagi Nahasing in parts of the constituency on Tuesday, the former confided that there is no organisations in the name of Khurai Panagi Nahasing and that it has no connection with the organisation in any form.
It said that following the revelation made by Khurai Pana, a call was made to the residents of Khurai to not take part in the rally as unwanted incidents like casualty might take place in the rally but unexpectedly some women having no ties with Khurai Panagi Nahasing picked up two Vice-Presidents of Khurai Apunba Meira Lup from their respective home and made to face humiliation on the road in full public view.
It alleged that the women also threatened the two Vice-Presidents that their houses will be torched besides making them to tender apology without any valid reasons.
It said that Khurai Apunba Meira Lup was formed as an apex body of Meira Paibis of Khurai and since its formation the women’s group has been taking active participation in the ongoing communal crisis besieging the State.
It said that the unwarranted act came at a time when sinister attempts are being made to reap political gains out of the ongoing crisis and topple the present government
While urging the Police Department to nab the culprits involved in the act at the earliest, it made it clear that those who defy the general strike should take sole responsibility for any untoward incidents arise during the course of thr general strike to be effective till 10 pm of October 10.
Making a fervent appeal to the people to extend support to the call of the women’s group, it conveyed that electricity, media, medical and ritual rogrammes will be exempted from the purview of the general strike.
