Imphal: In yet another drug haul in the State with the government’s War on Drugs campaign gaining momentum, Churachandpur Police on Friday seized 5.115 kg of suspected Brown Sugar from a woman.

As disclosed by a source, on Friday at 9.30 am, Churachandpur Police received a reliable information that a huge quantity of contraband drugs is being transported along Sugnu-Churachandpur road in a vehicle.

Accordingly, teams of Churachandpur PS led by OC-CCP PS, SI Zairemthang, ASI T. Thangsuanlian and police/VDF personnel and a team of Women Police Station Churachandpur conducted surveillance along Sugnu-Churachandpur road.

One vehicle KIA Seltos car (dark grey) bearing registration number AS27D3880 was found plying in a very suspicious manner and the vehicle was signaled to stop at Rengkai road but the vehicle speeded up without stopping. The vehicle was chased and finally intercepted at Bijang Vengpi, Churachandpur.

Four black bags suspected to be containing Brown Sugar were found inside the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle identified herself as Vahhoihlhing Baite (41), wife of Paokholal Baite of T. Lailoiphai village, Sangaikot, Churachandpur. A requisition was made to the DM/CCP to depute an EM for conducting search of the vehicle, said the source.

Accordingly, Zosanglur Joute, EM/CCP arrived at the spot. The four bags were opened in the presence of the EM and civil witnesses from the locality and it was found to contain 440 soap cases of suspected Brown Sugar.

On weighing, the suspected Brown Sugar was found to weigh 5.115 kg without the weight of the soap cases.

The suspected brown sugar, two mobile phones and KIA Seltos car were seized at 11.30 am by observing formalities and the individual arrested at 11.40 am.

A case under FIR NO.19(2)2023 CCP-PS u/s 21(c)/60 ND & PS Act has been registered for further investigation, it conveyed.

On the other hand, Tengnoupal Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR(South) foiled cross-border smuggling of Brown Sugar drugs at Khudengthabi, Tengnoupal district on Thursday.

During routine checking at Permanent Vehicle Check Post, Khudengthabi, troops of Tengnoupal Battalion recovered 22 packets of Brown Sugar, weighing 813 gram, that was being smuggled by a female commuter.

The drugs were concealed inside popcorn packets. The recovered narcotics are assessed to be worth Rs 1.62 crore, informed IGAR(S) in a press release.

The seized narcotics along with the drug peddler were handed over to Moreh Police for further investigation, it added.
