Leisem Pathou, Imphal organised a panel discussion on Constraints and prospects of census and religion, A holistic perspective was held at Manipur Press Club on Wednesday.
Founder of Leisem Pathou & Retd Associate Professor of Political science, Modern College, Dr H Indrakumar stated that the Indian government has conducted census every ten year and the increase in population has been seen through the records of the census.
He stressed on the changing demography of the state has influenced the Meiteis in their religion, tradition, socio-economic and identity. He asserted that the declining status of the Meitei is seen through the census record.
He noted that preserving the identity of the Meitei is closely related with census and stated that 2021 was the year for updating the census record which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He believed that despite postponing the counting of census is bound to happen at the earliest.
He pointed out the need to discuss about census and stated that it is the only way to save our tradition and religion. He appealed to include Meitei religion in the census record.
Indrakumar stated that there is no need for dependence if the people have knowledge about their language, literature, religion, tradition and culture. He appealed to the Meiteis to include ‘Meitei Laining’ in the religious identity of the new census record to preserve our religious identity.
The discussion program was also attended by Retd Chief Assocaiate SBI, L Birahari Meetei and Social Activist, Rakesh Moirangthem as panelists.
