Desperate Manipur girl escapes harassment by changing college

Mangaluru (Agency): Driven to her wits’ end by alleged harassment and assaults by fellow students from her home state, a student from Manipur has switched colleges, choosing to enrol in a private college near Kodialbail.

CD Jayanna, DDPU, Dakshina Kannada said the girl, a I PU science student, who had taken physics, chemistry, biology, and home science (PCBH) at her earlier college, has now changed her combination of subjects to physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology (PCMB). “The girl’s parents had approached our office to change her college after the incident at her previous college hostel.

The same was also directed by the deputy commissioner’s office of Dakshina Kannada, to make alternative arrangements, after the girl expressed unwillingness to discontinue her studies. Considering this a special case, we chose a couple of colleges with similar combinations.

Though those colleges have the subject combinations available, they have no hostel facilities. Finally, the girl student and department decided to change her existing subject combination to PCMB from PCBH,” said Jayanna, adding the girl has already taken admission, and attending regular classes. She stays at the college hostel.

Asked whether any action is being initiated against the college where the incident took place, Jayanna said it took place at the college hostel, and not the campus, over which the department has no control. Any action should be taken by the district administration, he said.

The incident took place at the PU college hostel two weeks ago, where some girl students from the second and first year of pre-university course had been allegedly harassing the girl. Things turned ugly when they allegedly tried to shove the girl into a dustbin. (Courtesy: The Times of India)
