IBSD celebrates 22 nd foundation day

Imphal: Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal celebrated its 22nd Foundation Day by organising a seminar on “Synergizing Research Verticals to promote Bioeconomy from Bioresources of NER” at its Takyelpat campus here on Wednesday.

IBSD was established on April 26, 2001 at Imphal, the only institute of Department of Biotechnology in the North Eastern Region working with the mission of “Bioresources development and their sustainable use through biotechnological interventions for the socio-economic growth of the North East region”.

This Institute is not only serving the people of Manipur in Northeast but also has three different other entities including its Regional Centre at Gangtok in Sikkim and Research Nodes at Shillong in Meghalaya and at Aizawl in Mizoram. IBSD has established a Bioresource Park at Haraorou, Imphal for germplasm collection of bioresources of NER.

While delivering his welcome speech, Prof. Pulok Kumar Mukherjee, Director, IBSD highlighted the scientific progress and outreach activities performed by the Institute. He also mentioned the new initiatives of IBSD including the Phytopharmaceutical Mission, Himalayan Bioresources Mission, Synergy Mission and Network Pharmacology for the development of bioresources of the region. Prof. Mukherjee highlighted the MoUs signed with 29 International/National institutes for collaborative research in this region of India.

Chief Guest of the programme, Prof. N.Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University highlighted about the unique biodiversity of this region and appreciated IBSD for working on traditional medicines and translational research for the development of products/processes.

Attending as Guest of Honor, Dr. Sanjay Mishra, Senior Advisor, Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi congratulated the Director, Scientists, scholars and staff of IBSD on this foundation day.

He appreciated the various research activities taken up by the institute for the development of bioresources of NER. He highlighted various challenges and opportunities in bioresources research for adaptation and mitigation of climate change. Dr. H. Tombi Singh, Former Director appreciated the research progress of IBSD and shared his experiences and ideas for the development of bioresources of the region.

Dr. Hanashiro Yoshihiro, Okinawa Churashima Foundation, Japan shared various activities of the foundation for the bioresources management in Japan and mentioned various areas for collaborative research with IBSD. Dr. Sanjay Dinkar Sawant, Director, Regional Institute of Paramedical and Nursing Sciences, Mizoram appreciated the efforts of Prof. Pulok K Mukherjee for initiating Phytopharmaceutical Mission for the validation of traditional medicines of NER. Dr. ZaveiHiese, Director, NESTEC, Nagaland highlighted various research opportunities for young researchers of the region. Sh. Tamal Kanti Mukherjee, Advocate, Calcutta High Court mentioned about the laws, acts for biodiversity conservation and benefit sharing from bioeconomy perspectives. Prof. G. A. ShanitibalaDevi, Former Dean, Manipur University highlighted various bioresources of the region for exploration and for the development of bioeconomy. The inaugural programme was followed by lab visits for the students form different schools and colleges of Manipur.

A Shantibala Devi were present as Guests of Honour. The programme was also attended by scientists, scholars and staff of IBSD, Imphal.
