Imphal: Jiribam MLA Md AchabUddin has urged BJP North East in Charge Dr Sambit Patra to mount pressure on the Ministry of Home Affairs not to withdraw 39 Assam Rifles post from Goakhal in
Jiribam district.
In a letter addressed to Sambit Patra, the MLA said that after steps for withdrawal of the AR post, the surrounding people have begun agitations opposing the withdrawal. The people of the sur-
rounding villages have been enjoying a peaceful life after the post was stationed at the place.
The people of the areas have expressed apprehension that they would face threats and harassment from unknown miscreants, the MLA said, demanding further retention of the AR post Meanwhile, locals in Jiribam
staged a protest denouncing the authority’s move to withdraw Assam Rifles post from Goakhal.
On getting the information about the withdrawal of AR post, locals of Goakhal and Sotobekra took to the streets and blocked the road by firing logs and tyres on the road on Sunday at about 5.30 PM. The
protesters also dismantled two bridges at Sotobekra and Goakhal,a source said.
Soon after receiving the news, a team of Jiribam Police led by district SDPO rushed to the spot and managed to calm down the protest. The protesters also staged a protest in front of the Assam Rifles post on
Monday and demanded the authority concerned to confirm about the withdrawal of the AR post.
