Imphal: Be prepared for heavy rains over the next 24 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall over Northeast India from 19th-21st March.
According to the IMD, isolated to very heavy rainfall is likely over Assam and Meghalaya on 19th and 20th March. The IMD has predicted Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim during 19th 21st March. “Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim during 1921. Isolated very heavy rainfall also likely over Assam and Meghalaya on 19th and 20th March, and Isolated hailstorm very likely over Sikkim on 19th March 2023,” the IMD release said.
The arrival of pre-monsoon rainfall is a boon to the people of Manipur who are currently reeling under brunt of acute hardship of scarcity of water. The premonsoon Rainfall which resumed from Sunday morning has given a ray of hope to the aggrieved people of the state who are facing acute water scarcity.
With the PHED department halting to provide water due to drying up of water sources, rivers including Singda dam, People in Imphal area are purchasing water from private tankers at a highly inflated rate for drinking, cooking and other purposes.
The state government is also taking up various measures to resolve the unprecedented water crisis as fallout of the mass deforestation and Poppy plantation in the hill areas including the catchment areas. To resolve the water crisis, the state government is on a hectic work for installation of 100 -150 water filling points at Khuman Lampak which will provide water to the people free of cost.
PHED Minister L Susindro Meitei in a recent media briefing informed that necessary arrangements have been made at the Khuman Lampak Sports complex where at least 100 water filling stations will be set up. The Government has made elaborate arrangements to relieve the people from the acute water crisis which has left a harsh impact on the day to day lives of those living in Imphal and adjoining areas, the PHED Minister said while elab-

severity of the situation, elaborating, “In Imphal we require more than 130 MLD per day and we have
a source from the Chingkhei Ching at Thoubal dam. However this source can supply only 40 MLD and
