Imphal: Taking serious note of the misleadinh video clip circulated on YouTube by Shillong Mail on April 3 claiming to be land dispute issues among Khasi and Manipuri people living in Jiribam district in Manipur, Shillong Manipur Students’ Union (SMSU) appealed to the Manipur Government to look into the matter and resolve at the earliest so as to avoid such confusion in the future.
A press statement issued by President of SMSU said that it is very unfortunate and shocking news that Shillong Mail uploaded some disturbing clips on Youtube claiming to be land dispute among Khasi and Manipuri people living in Jiribam District of Manipur.
It said the union has examined the video and found that the there was no such report or incident took place where Khasi were ill-treated and threatened over land
dispute issues. But in fact, it misleaded the public leading to fear and hatred among the communities. SMSU condemned such wrongful circulation of news over social media by mentioning communities. We also condemned those
concerned party leading to such activities, creating fear and hatred among the societies, threatening the lives of many people residing in and around Meghalaya, it added.
It stated that the actual incident took placed on April 2, 2023 between some Meetei and Rongmai tribes of Manipur in Jiribam district and Tousem Sub-Division of Tamenglong District of Manipur over land dispute in presence of Jiribam police. The incident was nothing related to or involved by any Khasi people of Meghalaya living in Manipur and there is no such report of chasing /threatening or ban on Cultivating, populated by Khasi areas in Manipur by any communities.
The clip that has showed in YouTube is misleading the cordial relationship between the Khasi and Manipuri which existed over several decades. We believe such activities were allegedly framed for some benefits trying to cause hatred among the communities especially the Meetei community. It may be noted that last year, 2022 under the initiative of North East Students Organization (NESO)
with support from All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Shillong
have visited the inhabited areas of Khasi villages in Manipur and have met the CM of Manipur for the welfare of the Khasi people and positively the CM has given assurance for the safeguard and peaceful existence of Meghalaya people in Manipur.
