MPCC stages protest, demands probe into Adani row

Imphal: Strongly denouncing the “forceful” multi-crore investment by LIC, SBI, public sector banks and financial institutes in Adani Group,

workers of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Monday took to the streets in Imphal and other parts of the State and staged a mass protest demonstration against the Narendra Modi-led NDA government.

A large number of protesters led by MPCC President K Meghachandra, CWC member Gaikhangam and CLP leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi staged a protest demonstration in front of the LIC office in Imphal over the Hindenburg report against the Adani Group.

The protesters demanded probe into the Hindenburg Research Project under the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and inquiry by a Joint Parliament Team on investment by

LIC, SBI, public sector banks and financial institutes in Adani Group, apart from conducting a discussion in the Parliament on investment by LIC, SBI, public sector banks and financial institutes in Adani Group.

Speaking to newspersons, CLP leader Okram Ibobi said that a New York-based investor research firm Hindenburg Research Project

conducted investigation into the source of income of Adani Group after the latter surprisingly became world’s third richest person.

He said the probe established that the income source of Adani Group is the crores of rupees of the poor Indians deposited with SBI and LIC and with the collapse of Adani’s business, many investors have started withdrawing their investment from LIC and SBI.

It is said that a, staggering Rs 70,000 lakh crores of LIC was invested in Adani Group. Such investment of huge crores of rupees in Adani Group will not be possible without Modi’s backing, Ibobi contended.

He said that the Congress and other like minded opposition parties are demanding in the Parliament to investigate the multi-crore investment by LIC, SBI, public sector banks and financial institutes in Adani Group by a committee headed by the Chief Justice of India or by a joint Parliamentary Committee comprising both the ruling and opposition MPs.

However, the NDA government rejected the demand, which is quite suspicious. The Congress protested to save LIC and SBI so that the hard-earned money of the poor people is not looted by Adani-led conglomerate, he said, pledging that the Congress will continue protest until the demands are fulfilled.

MPCC President Meghachandra alleged the Modi-led government of indulging in “crony capitalism” and “compromising” the

administration of the country to benefit industrialist Adani Group.

He said that the deposits of 29 crore LIC account holders amounting to Rs 33,000 crore and savings of 45 crore account holders in SBI amounting to Rs 80,000 crore have been invested in the Adani-led conglomerate under Moddi’s pressure without due consent of the policy holders and account holders.

He demanded investigation into the case by a committee led by the Chief Justice of India or by a Joint Parliamentary Committee, because the money belongs to the poor people, not Modi or the Central Government. The country will be totally ruined by Modi, he charged.

The protesters shouted slogans “Modi government, down down”, “Lets save SBI, LIC”, “Down-down BJP” during the protest.

Similar protests were also held in different districts of the State, including Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching and others spearheaded by the respective District Congress Committees.

In Thoubal district, hundreds of protesters led by Thoubal District Congress Commitee President Nongmaithem Lukhoi staged a protest demonstration in front of LIC office at Thoubal Athokpam.

Lukhoi alleged that the Modi government has sold out LIC and SBI to its close industrialist Adani group to benefit them. He said that the Congres Party will always stand against such policy to benefit a few group of people.

Members of Kakching District Congress Committee also staged a protest demonstration in front of LIC office, Kakching.

.

Slogans “Stop crony capitalism”, “Congress stand for common people”, “Stop amending rule to benefit Adani”, “Congress demand JPC probe into forceful investment by LIC and SBI” etc were raised by the protesters during the protest.
