Imphal: To recognise the sterling performance at Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Red Shield Division of Spear Corps felicitated Padma Shri awardee Saikhom Mirabai Chanu who is credited for realising India’s aspirations of over two decades to secure an Olympic medal in weightlifting by clinching the silver medal in the 49 kg category at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.

Mirabai Chanu’s heroic performance etched her name in golden letters to become the second weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal, said a press release issued by PIB (Defence Wing).

The felicitation ceremony organised at Leimakhong Military Station was attended by officers, troops and families of Red Shield Division. Maj Gen Navin Sachdeva, General Officer Commanding of Red Shield Division congratulated Mirabai Chanu and presented her with a memento as a token of appreciation.

During the interaction with young soldiers and children, the Olympian shared her experiences of her journey to the podium finish and exhorted young soldiers and children to aspire big with a focused approach to fulfil dreams, it said.
