Imphal: Justice A. Bimol Singh, Judge, High Court of Manipur and Executive Chairman, Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) and Justice A. Guneshwar Sharma, Judge High Court of Manipur and Chairperson, High Court Legal Services Committee (HCLSC) inaugurated the office of the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System (LADCS) for the district of Imphal West and Imphal East at Cheirap Court Complex, Imphal West and Lamphelpat Court Complex, Imphal West, Manipur on Saturday.
Addressing the gathering Justice, A. Bimol Singh, Judge, High Court of Manipur and Executive Chairman, Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) stated that the LADCS aims to provide the free legal aid and assistance to poor and needy individual w.r.t representation/conducting trial and appeals including all miscellaneous work in all criminal matters. Further, he highlighted that, office of the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System for the state of Manipur were initially implemented for 4 districts viz. Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur where legal aided cases are maximum.
Further, for the remaining 5 districts viz. Senapati, Churachandpur, Ukhrul, Chandel and Tamenglong where the legal aided cases are minimal, the Legal Aid Defense Counsels which are recruited for the Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur will be utilised on rotational basis as per the requirements.
The Inaugural Program was attended by Salam Imocha Singh, Special Judge POCSO Court I; Smt. R.K Memcha Devi, District and Sessions Judge, Imphal West; W. Tonen Meitei, District and Sessions Judge Imphal East; Samom Ibjen, District and Sessions Judge, Thoubal; Shri Letkho Kipgen, District and Sessions Judge, Bishnupur; Ojesh Mutum, Member Secretary, MASLSA; Sonykumar Nepram, OSD, MASLSA; Sadananda Sorokhaibam, Addl. Member Secretary, MASLSA along with Judicial Officers of Cheirap Court Complex and Lamphelpat Court Complex, President and Executive Members of All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) and All Manipur Lady Advocates Association (AMLAA), Advocates; staff of Manipur State Legal Services Authority.
Mentioned may be made that, LADCS is a scheme under National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), to provide free legal aid to poor needy people facing criminal cases to defend themselves during trial.
