Imphal: Rebutting the charges leveled against the BJP with regard to a Surat Court sentencing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years

imprisonment in a criminal defamation case over “Modi surname”remarks, BJP Manipur Pradesh has clarified that the saffron party has nothing to do with the issue as the case is between the law of the land and the law

offender.

Addressing the media at a press meet held at Thambal Shanglen, Nityaipat Chuthek on Friday, BJP Manipur Pradesh Spokesperson Laimayum Bashanta Sharma said that the country has witnessed a political uproar after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years jail term along with a fine of Rs 15,000 by a court in Surat, which the opposition parties including Congress have strongly reacted against the court verdict.

Reacting against the allegations leveled against the BJP government, the BJP spokesman categorically clarified that the Surat court held Rahul Gandhi guilty in a 2019 criminal defamation case over the “Modi surname” remarks and sentenced him to two years of imprisonment.

Notably, Gujarat MLA Purnesh Modi filed the defamation case against Rahul Gandhi for his alleged “how come all the thieves have Modi as

the common surname” remarks. The Lok sabha MP from wayanad made the alleged remarks while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Wiith regard to Congress’s statement that the party will not buckle under Modi’s threat, Bashanta clarified that the BJP or Modi never

threatened Rahul Gandhi and that he was sentenced to two years of imprisonment after he was found guilty by the law court.

The Congress always claims that the party respects law. Then, why does the party fail to honour the recent court verdict, he asked.

He recounted that during the rule of PM Indira Gandhi, emergency was declared in the entire nation in 1975, completely violating democracy.

People had no rights and even the media was prohibited from functioning. However, today the people do not want Congress and chose Narendra Modi to be their leader who has taken India towards development. Modi is known all over the world for his leadership. The love for the BJP by the people is increasing, he said.

He said that the Congress party and opposition envy the various development and achievement brought the party and how people love BJP.

People will decide whether they want Congress or BJP or any other party through election, he added.

He said that Rahul Gandhi still has 30 days to appeal to the higher court. If the case reaches the Supreme Court, then Rahul Gandhi will fail

and he will not be able to represent the people as per the People’s Representation Act.

Many political analysts have raised questions on how a Prime Ministerial candidate like Rahul Gandhi has stooped so low, he added.

Reacting to the MPCC’s charges that no democratic protest is allowed after the BJP came to power, Bashanta said it is the duty of the State force to maintain the law and order. It is the law enforcing police which prevented the protest, not the BJP. The saffron party should not be blamed for this, he added.

Taking part in the press conference, RK.Nongdrenkhomba, President OBC Morcha BJP Manipur Pradesh said the people have opposed the statement of Rahul Gandhi and that the issue is not between BJP and Rahul Gandhi but between the law and the accused Rahul Gandhi who spoke against the Modi community with derogatory comments.
