Imphal: Achieving another milestone, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) which is on the brink of upgrading to the level of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has installed neuroendoscope and neuro microscope for neurosurgery.
Neuroendoscope and neuro microscope offer good magnification without significant aberrations, sufficient illumination without excessive heat, and satisfying stability without sacrificing operational flexibility. The cameras attached to modern neuroendoscope and microscope allows surgical procedures to be recorded in high-definition quality. With the appropriate attachments, it is possible for the assistants to visualize the same surgical field as the primary surgeon which is tremendously helpful for teaching.
The equipment has become fundamental to the success of modern neurosurgical and other surgical specialty procedures which are expected to operate at RIMS Hospital.
The 4K and 3D Digital Hybrid Visualization was found to be a significant improvement over prior technology. With the exoscopic visualization mode and long working distance, the entire operative room team can appreciate the detailed structures in the depth of the surgical corridor. Furthermore, the 3D widescreen exoscopic view increases educational value.
RIMS Director Prof Santa said that the premier institute had taken a pivotal in combating the first wave of Covid-19 with the hospital conducting maximum number of testing both RAT and RT PCR and during the ongoing second wave which is more considered more brutal, RIMS increased Covid beds to 300 besides opening of Neuro ICU to meet the requirement of hospitalization of Covid patients.
He said that RIMS has started taking care of post Covid care apart from opening OPD for six days with three days for Medicine, two days for Respiratory Medicine and the remaining one day for Pediatrics as per the demand.
He maintained that RIMS has also taken a key role in vaccination which is the only means to keep the lethal virus at bay and to do away with the sense of hesitancy, the institute had launched a vaccination drive on January 16 with him taking the first shot of the vaccine to dispel the fear in the minds of the people.
The Professor said that it was a proud moment for RIMS and the State in particular when Tokyo Olympics Silver medalist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu inaugurated the Arthroscopic Machine Set at the Sports Medicine Department of the institute. Very few medical institutes in the country have Sports Medicine. RIMS was authorized to open the department after going through its credentials and required formalities. It is a big achievement, he added.
He said that there was no shortage of oxygen in the institute during the first wave of Covid-19 but the need for oxygen grew exponentially during the second wave with the detection of the Delta variant and almost 80 percent of hospitalized Covid patients requiring oxygen.
He assured that there will be no shortage of oxygen during the possible outbreak of the third wave with the operational of the oxygen plant in the institute and procurement from different parts of the country. Donation of oxygen by individuals and groups to the institute also proved very beneficial, he added.
Prof Santa said that RIMS scripted history after the institute clinched 38th position in National Institutional Ranking Framework of Human Resource Development (NIRF) ranking 2019-20.
He conveyed that RIMS is the only medical college in the entire Northeast and West Bengal to figure amongst the top 40 medical institutions and universities of the country.
