IMPHAL: A youth was killed in a crossfire between police personnel and unknown miscreants who first started the shooting from among a crowd at the residence of Md Thembung at Lilong Usoipokpi Mairelkhul Makha Tathabi Leikai when the security team had gone there on a secret mission along with volunteers of All Lilong Anti Drug Association at around 6.30 pm on Thursday to recover contraband drugs.

The person killed was identified as Md. Shajid, 22 years, son of Md Azad from the same locality.

Sources stated that at the mentioned time police team led by inspector Oinam Ajit of Lilong PS and accompanied by some commando personnel and anti-drug activists from ALADA landed at the residence of Md Thembung (30), son of Md Rokshan Ali armed with specific information about the presence of drugs in his house. The members of the family tried to build a mob and within a short time a large number of people from the neighborhood assembled at the house of Md Thembung. According to reports a commotion broke out between the people present there and the members of the drive team. Suddenly, gunshots were fired from an unidentified part from among the crowd. As soon as the exchange of gun shots began the assembled people started running helter skelter. Afterwards, it was discovered that Md Shajid had died after being hit in the firing. However, it could not be ascertained so far as to the origin of the bullet that killed him. Police reinforcement team was sent to the location to control the situation which is reported to be stable but tense.
