THOUBAL: In what could be definitely termed as crime against woman at its highest tone, a young woman was in a critical stage after being severely tortured black and blue by her husband.
Following the incident, a Joint Action Committee has been constituted demanding the husband be booked along with others who are involved in the crime at the earliest. Further, a case has also been registered at Women Police Station Porompat to book the same.
The victim was identified as Sanatombi alias Sana, 27, daughter of Md. Saffiruddin of Sangaiyumpham Part (I) Yangbi Leikai, Thoubal District while the husband was identified as Md. Habibur Rahman,35, son of Md. Abdur Rashid, a resident of Ngariyan Makak, Imphal East District.
Briefing media persons at the resident of the victim on Monday, Fazur Rahman, convenor of the JAC charged the husband of torturing Sanatombi and also attempting to kill her.
The convenor narrated that husband and wife eloped on March 10 this year and that the religious ceremony ‘Nikah’ was done at the groom’s residence after an agreement with the elders of both the families. The families also agreed to hold the marriage ceremony on July 20 and the bride was brought back to her parental house then, Fazur narrated.
The convenor also briefed that on May 15, the groom had come at the house of his father-in-law and requested that there were some family chores at his house and let them be allowed to celebrate Eid together following which he returned along with his wife on that day itself. The husband came at his father-in-laws house with his wife Sanatombi for the second time on May 26, the day after Eid festival and again brought back his wife on May 27, the next day. From that day onwards, there was no communication between Sanatombi and her parental families, the convenor narrated further.
Being worried, Sanatombi’s mother went to the groom’s resident on June 20 only to find her daughter being tied with a rope to a bed. Shocked, the mother untied her daughter hurriedly only to further find her daughter’s body covered with several injury marks to the level of a third degree torture, Fazur said. Seeing the condition and fearing that her daughter could be killed if she stayed longer with her husband, the mother took her daughter home and later admitted her at the Thoubal District Hospital for treatment. However, after a day’s treatment at the hospital, they were advised by the doctors to rest at home due to COVID-19 following which they were discharged on Sunday, the convenor informed.
The convenor also informed that a JAC has been formed in connection with the incident and some resolutions were also taken unanimously.
It was resolved that concerned authorities should nab the husband and others who are involved in the heinous crime of attempting to kill Sanatombi. Further, it was also resolved that the case of this incident should be dealt at First Tract Court.
The JAC has also set June 25 as dateline for transforming their demands into action failing which the JAC would organize severe forms of agitation along with CSOs of the state, the convenor Fazur Rahman warned. He also requested the women welfare organisations of the state to lend support for getting justice at this crime against woman.
