THOUBAL: The JAC against the brutal killing of Miss Washima, has called a 24 hour general strike in the state from midnight of Thursday, citing the failure of the administration to fulfill its demands for arrest of the perpetrators and awarding them punishment under the law within its deadline of 48 hours which had expired.
The eighteen year old girl from Yairipok Tulihal in Imphal East district was found dead at a fish farm in Irong Salam Macha, under Mayang Imphal Police Station, on January 27, 2020.
Making the announcement this evening at a press conference at Yairipok Tulihal, convenor of the JAC Meinam Rashid Ali made the claim that the state government did not give any positive response to the demands made by the committee in connection with her killing. Hence, the necessity to call the bandh had arisen, he said. He urged the civil society organisations to support the strike while mentioning that essential services, religious functions and movement of media persons will be exempted from the purview of the strike.
He further warned that if the administration does not show any positive response during the period of the strike too, then continuation of the agitation will ensue in consultation with CSOs.
Khullakpam Washima, daughter of Janamuddin, was a second semester student in arts stream at Maharaj Budhachandra College at Konung Mamang. Her brother expressed suspicion that she could have been killed and the body abandoned after the assailants raped her. Her alleged paramour who was named as Md Shahid, 25 years, son of Md Ethem of Yairipok Changamdabi Mathak Leikai was apprehended by womenfolk belonging to the locality of the deceased girl from Thoubal Kshetri Leikai after identifying him as possible suspect and handed him over to the police. Md Shahid is now in police custody at Mayang Imphal PS. Her aunt, Manerjan citing information passed on by the friends of the deceased claimed that Shahid and Washima was a couple for two years. However, another source had maintained that Shahid has a wife and three children.
A public meeting was held at Tulihal Mayai Leikai Playground where the JAC was set up and a list of demand was forwarded to the state government with a deadline of 48 hours.
