WAD condemns rape of a minor girl, urges for charge sheet without delays

TMB Report

Imphal: The Women Action for Development (WAD) has on Saturday strongly condemned the sexual assault of a minor girl of three and half years at a village in Moreh.

In a press release of WAD signed by its secretary Sobita, it was stated that the WAD received information from reliable sources and local newspapers that a very minor girl of three and half years was raped by a juvenile from the same locality.

The release stated that the incident took place on September 15 at around 5.30 PM and the girl was brought to Moreh PHC at around 6.30 PM with serious bleeding. The PHC Moreh referred the minor girl to RIMS at midnight of the same day after providing normal medication. The doctor reported the police about the incident and FIR has been lodged by the Moreh Police station bearing (FIR No 72(9)2020 MRH-PS U/S 6 POCSO Act. According to information the accused is still at large. It is informed that the adoptive mother refused to disclose the details of the rapist, it added.

WAD asserted that it also received information that the case has been settled with the payment of Rs.3.50 lakh under customary law. If this is true, then it is very unfortunate for the future generation of Manipur. We learned that there are many cases of such heinous crime committed against women and children which are settled with a pig, buffalo etc and failed to be reported specially from the hill Districts.

WAD further in its strongest term asked the family, community and village Khullakpa (Chiefs) to take initiative to hand over the rapist to police without delay.

“We would like to ask the family members, locality, village elders and others who are supporting the rapist to immediately stop threatening the officials and voluntary workers and child activists to conceal the case,” said the statement.

WAD has made a concern appeal to all the CSOs, tribal unions, student bodies, religious institutions in Moreh to strongly condemn such act of brutalities to a minor girl child, and requested them not to support such an act but to extend possible support to police to arrest the rapist. It urged the concerned police station to arrest the rapist and frame the charge sheet without delay to meet the end of justice.
