Villages in Lamlai AC at Loggerheads over RCC Bridge Construction

JAC Threatens to block Imphal-Ukhrul Road on March 2

TMB Report

IMPHAL: The controversy over construction of a RCC Bridge over Iril river in Lamlai Assembly constituency has re-surfaced again. The bridge construction work has turned out to be an apple of discord, putting the villages of Loushangkhong, Huidrom and Sekta at loggerheads.

A day after the Bridge Construction Demand Committee threatened to block the Imphal-Ukhrul road and Imphal-Keibi road indefinitely demanding to construct the contentious bridge at Sekta Huidrom,  JAC against the shifting of Loushangkhong bridge has also threatened to block the Imphal-Ukhrul road from March 2 if the concerned department fails to construct the bridge at Loushangkhong.

Briefing reporters at Loushangkhong suspension bridge, JAC Convener H Shyamananda said that foundation stone for construction of the Loushangkhong bridge was laid on May 6, 2019 in the presence of concerned Executive Engineer Imphal East, AE, Special contractor and local people. The concerned ministry on December 29, 2017 approved the construction of the RCC bridge at Loushangkhong over Iril river under PMGSY package no,MN04105/PMGSY-Ph-XI (B-I,2017/18). Following the approval, RED/MSRRDA Chief engineer announced an e-tender and a special contractor was awarded the work for construction of the bridge on February 26, 2019. Thereupon, laying of the foundation stone for the bridge construction was held on May 6 in the same year. However, much to the astonishment of the people, the foundation stone for the construction of a bridge under the same package number was laid at Sekta Huidrom on May 16, 2019, he revealed.

He said that construction site for the RCC bride should be at Loushangkhong as per DPR, work order and ministry sanction letter. Shifting of the bridge from Loushangkhong to another village is quite unacceptable.  The controversy over the bridge construction is likely to trigger an inter-village clash among Loushangkhong, Sekta and Huidrom. The local MLA should not politicize the issue of construction of the bridge for gaining political mileage, he added.

Stating that the people will never allow the shifting of the bridge, that was already approved by the ministry, he cautioned that they are prepared to launch intensified agitation if the authority fails to pay heed to their demand.

He clarified that the JAC has been carrying out agitation without instigation from anybody.

Locals of Loushangkhong were also present at the press conference.

Latter, the villagers shouted slogans “Don’t shift Bridge from Loushangkhong”, “MLA should not politicize Bridge construction work”.
