UPRFM calls 12-hr shutdown on R-Day, bans celebration

TMB Report

IMPHAL: Asserting that in the backdrop of the continuous oppression of the local people, there is no rationality behind the celebration of Republic Day of India, the United People’s Revolutionary Front of Manipur (UPRFM) has announced a 12-hour total shutdown in the state from 6 am to 6 pm of January 26, 2020.

Informing this a press release issued by the information and publicity secretary of the organisation further added that Manipur was an independent kingdom from 33 AD onwards when there was not even a semblance of the Indian union and there have been a succession of more than 76 rulers in Manipur ever since. It went on to relate that Manipur achieved independence from the British rule one day ahead of India. Subsequently, under the aegis of Maharaja Budhachandra, a committee was constituted with 17 members representing both hills and valley areas in order to draft a constitution for a democratic government of Kangleipak. On the basis of the resolution of the committee an adult franchise was exercised in June-July of 1948 and the first Legislative Assembly of Manipur was elected. But, in violation of the international protocol the erstwhile princely state of Manipur was annexed by India, the press statement added. On 15th October, 1949 Manipur was formally merged with India and its freedom was usurped by the latter, it added.

The celebration of the 71st Republic Day could be construed in no other way but as a continuation of the years of enslavement and intolerable persecution from the colonial force, it stated maintaining that as a result it had called the shut down and announced prohibition of all sorts of celebration in connection with the occasion.
