Bishnupur: Amidst the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown and the security measures taken up in Bishnupur district under SP Priyadarshini Laishram, large numbers of tobacco products and gutkha packets were seized during a checking and frisking operation carried out by personnel of Phougakchao Ikhai Police station at Kwakta Bazaar on Monday.
According to police source, a team led by SI M. Romen Singh of Phougakchao Ikhai Police Station under the command of OC Kh. Rajen Khanganba, seized the large numbers of tobacco products during routine frisking and checking at Kwakta bazaar from a passenger auto rickshaw, coming in suspicious manners from Churachandpur towards Moirang at around 9:30 pm.
The team seized 30 plastic packets of Talab and 30 plastic packets of Talab Zarda from the person identified as MV. Ramijuddin (38 years), son of Md. Nasiruddin of Kwakta Municipal council ward no. 2, who was transporting the tobacco products.
In connection with the seizure of the tobacco products, OC Kh. Rajen Khanganba has urged the people to follow the Covid-19 guidelines issued by the State government and concern DC which include ban on spitting in public places highlighting that consumption of tobacco products is one of the reasons which let to spitting in public spots.
The seized tobacco products was disposed by burning after the arrested person and the sized items were produced before the Executive magistrate Bishnupur, and further legal actions will be taken up against the person who was transporting the tobacco products, the source added.
