IMPHAL: At least three close family members of Health Minister L Jayentakumar from Pishumthong Oinam Leikai have tested positive for COVID-19 but the minister himself was found to be free of Coronavirus.
One of them is said to be a cousin of the Minister and was hospitalized at Shija Hospital on July 24 after he met with an accident. He was found positive when his sample was tested as routine check up before surgery. Samples of remaining family members were tested but only three turned out to be positive. They have been shifted to COVID care centre, sources said.
Samples of the Minister, and his staff were also collected and tested. Luckily all results including that of the Minister came negative.
Health Minister L Jayentakumar in his Facebook account said, “during this crucial fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, one of my cousins has been tested COVID positive. As a precautionary measure, I called and gathered all my immediate office staffs, family members and everyone related for immediate COVID tests. I and all of my staffs are found to be COVID negative. Also, all family members, except two, are tested negative. Following the results, all the precautionary measures as per the protocols mentioned in the state SOP have been followed and the patients have been shifted to the COVID Care Center. The COVID-19 virus is invisible , contagious and unpredictable. We don’t know who will be the next target. The only available vaccine right now is “precautions”. Therefore, we, as an individual and the people of the state, need to follow and abide by the SOPs and the guidelines provided by the Health Department. There is nothing to panic or be anxious. With the full cooperation, understanding and coordination, we can unitedly fight against the coronavirus pandemic”.
Meanwhile, the total count of COVID-19 positive cases in the state has spiked to 2235 with 59 more fresh cases (43 males, 16 females) detected during the last 24 hours.
58 cases were detected at RIMS lab and one case at Babina Diagnostics.
The fresh cases included 37 from Imphal West district, five from Kakching district, three from Tamenglong and 14 from Thoubal district, according to a release by COVID-19 common control room.
All except five persons from Thoubal and one from Imphal West are returnees from other states.
The infected patients will be shifted to COVID care facilities and necessary medical precautionary measures like containment and contact tracing are in place, added the statement.
The Control Room further stated that one person was discharged from Covid care centre Thoubal on Sunday.
State’s total count of active COVID-19 cases stand at 714 with 1521 patients out of 2235 having recovered.
Government has intensified action against the increasing trend of locally transmitted, sporadic cases occurring in some parts of the state. In Thoubal district, active case search among 6475 people completed and 10 new cases could be detected. Further surveillance is going on. In Churachandpur district, 545 contacts of an employee of a private lab were identified. 143 of them were found negative and results of the remaining are still awaited. Social distancing, wearing of masks, cough etiquette and avoidance unnecessary travel are scientifically proven, effective means to prevent the virus spread, the Health department said and appealed to adhere to the measures to protect self and society.
According a status update by IDSP Manipur, 962 samples were tested at RIMS and 58 of them came positive for the Virus. One sample out of 54 tested at Babina diagnostic turned out to be positive for the contagion. 40 samples tested at DH Senapati, four at DH Tamenglong came negative.
