Thoubal District observes World Suicide Prevention Day

Thoubal: The District Mental Health Programme of District Health Society, Thoubal observed World Suicide Prevention Day – 2020 under the theme “Working together to prevent suicide” at the Conference Hall of District Health Society, Thoubal on Tuesday.

District Programme Manager, District Health Society, Thoubal Ch. Basanta; District Nodal Officer, District Mental Health Programme Dr. Jina Chanu and District Community Mobiliser, District Health Society, Thoubal Md. Riyas Sheikh attended as presidium members of the observance.

ASHA workers, youths, club leaders and staff attended the inaugural function.

Dr. Jina Chanu highlighted the importance of observance of the day and stressed on the point that suicide prevention requires involvement of all the stack holders namely government, health department, educators, NGOs, health care providers and also people affected by suicidal behavior. The doctor also informed that population in the age group of 15 to 30 years have the highest suicidal rate.

Ch. Basanta stressed on the role of ASHAs and other front line workers and their role in generating mass awareness on prevention of suicide. As the suicidal rate is high among the age group of adolescents and youth it is very much important to join hands with youth organizations like NYK, Youth Clubs and Mahila Mandals he said adding that joining together will definitely help in preventing suicide and everyone can make a contribution in preventing suicide.

He said that topics on suicide prevention may be included in the Mahila Arogya Samiti meetings and Village Health Sanitation and nutrition Committee Meetings. Life Skills, Soft Skills and leadership training may be imparted to the youths so that they can cope with the various challenges they faced in their life.

He further informed the ASHA workers present in the programme to invite mental health officials in the Adolescent health day programme held at their respective villages/localities where Peer Educators and their fellow mates attended.

As a part of the observance, miking activity and distribution of leaflets to the public places of Thoubal district were conducted.
