Imphal: In opposition to the administration refusal to fulfill the 12 points proposal put up by the six students’ bodies namely AIMS, DESAM, DESAM, MSF, KSA and SUK, the relay hunger strike by the students continued for the second day at Kwakeithel Thokchom Leikai Community Hall on Thursday.
On the second day of relay hunger strike, secretary general of DESAM Leishangthem Lamyanba said that a big shadow of doubt has fallen over the state government due to its inept handling of Covid-19 pandemic. As the government has not taken up the necessary measures, the people in the state began to act irresponsibly and reacted to the disease very thoughtlessly, and for these different reasons, the numbers of positive cases and deaths are rapidly increasing in the state, he said.
He continued that only in this month of October more than seven thousand persons were infected by Covid-19 and in the month of November more than ten thousand persons could fell prey to the outbreak. He calculated that after one month, there will be no place for treatment of Covid-19 patients and appealed to the state government to start the construction of 500 bedded dedicated Covid hospital at the earliest as clearly mentioned in their 12 points proposal. He said that the administration alone will not be able to fight against the disease without the help of community participation. So for this reason also in order to carry on frequent awareness all across the state through teachers is needed, he added.
All this is happening due to the lack of a comprehensive policy and due to non implementation of some, and now the state government needs to establish a comprehensive Covid-19 Counter Measure Policy, he said.
He further stated that the problem and suffering which we are facing currently will not have come if we have known our responsibilities and duties very well. So, we all have to know the merits of civic sense, he added.
The relay hunger strike was organized to put pressures for turning the 12 points proposal into action and in order to take the right responsibility by the people in the state amidst this pandemic crisis situation. He appealed to the CSOs, NGO, clubs, meira paibis and all other students’’ organizations to support and encourage the strike and appealed to all to take a full responsibility to save all the communities from Covid-19 disease.
