Imphal: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Manipur Pradesh President Prof Saikhom Tijendra passed away due to Covid-19 at Shija Hospital on Thursday at around 7 PM.
Prof Tikendra was tested positive for Covid-19 on April 27 after having mild fever without cough and since then he was self-quarantining at home.
He was elected as BJP Manipur Pradesh President on June 2, 2020 replacing Kshetrimayum Bhabananda Singh. He had served as BJP Manipur Pradesh General Secretary (Administration) from 2006 to 2009.
Born in 1952 in a political family in Bishnupur, Prof Tikendra completed his MA in Philosophy from the Banaras Hindu University in 1973.
He was associated with Jay Prakash Narayan movement during his university days.
He was also an Associate Professor at Maharaja Bodhachandra College in Imphal but took voluntary retirement from college in 1994 to join the BJP.
Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar has deeply mourned the sad demise of Prof Tikendra. Talking to The Morning Bell via telephone, the Union Minister said that Prof Tikendra was a hardworking and staunch leader who gave a new direction to BJP Manipur Pradesh through his hard work and dedication. He prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
Expressed shock over the sudden demise of Prof Tikendra, Chief Minister N Biren said that they have lost a stalwart of BJP Manipur who dedicated his life for the service of people and the party. A retired Professor, who worked tirelessly with selfless devotion towards the ideology of BJP, Prof Tikendra was loved by one and all in Manipur.
Communist Party of India (M) State unit also deeply condoled the sudden demise of BJP Manipur Pradesh President due to Covid-19 after battling his life at Shija Hospital.
A press release issued by CPI (M) State unit Secretary Kshetrimayum Santa said that Prof. Tiken served the people of the State in many capacities as an academician, social worker, political worker and as President of BJP Manipur Pradesh for a short stint.
He shared the sorrow of the bereaved family members and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
