IMPHAL: Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Yumnam Khemchand has accepted the resignation of five Congress MLAs namely Okram Henary of 15-Wangkhei AC, Oinam Lukhoi of 22-Wangoi AC, Md Abdul Nasir of 30-Lilong AC, Ngamthang Haokip of 51-Saitu AC and Ginsuanhau of 60-Singhat AC.
However, judgment on the resignation of another Congress legislator Paonam Brojen of Wangjing Tentha, who had also given in his papers along with the five legislators, has been put aside for the time being as a disqualification case against him is pending for hearing in the next few days. Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretary has issued Bulletin part-II with regard to the fate of the five Congress MLAs.
A separate notification issued by the Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretary also declared that the seats of 15-Wangkhei AC, 22-Wangoi AC, 30-Lilong AC, 51-Saitu AC, and 60-Singhat AC are now lying vacant.
Notably, six Congress MLAs namely Okram Henary, Oinam Lukhoi, Md Abdul Nasir, Ngamthang Haokip, Ginsuanhau, and Paonam Brojen on Monday tendered their resignation letters to the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, whereby helping in tilting the balance of the vote of confidence in favour of BJP led coalition which it ultimately won quite comfortably. The 6 MLAs had also abstained from the single day monsoon session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly held on Monday.
However, the Speaker has put the resignation of MLA Paonam Brojen of Wangjing Tentha on hold in view of a pending disqualification case against the MLA. On the other hand, Speaker’s Tribunal of the Manipur Legislative Assembly has fixed August 14 for delivery of judgment and order in connection with the disqualification case of MLA Paonam Brojen. The disqualification petitions were filed by Thongram Surendra Singh, Langpoklakpam Ronendro and MLA K Govindas.
