Sit-in demanding ST status continues

Imphal: Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) continued protest unabated to demand inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list on Sunday.

A sit-in-protest was organised at Youth Social Club cum Information Centre in collaboration with Langdai Meira Paibi Nupi Lup on similar demand.

General Secretary of STDCM, K Bhogendrajit, Laishram Romesh and Co-convenor of Youth wing STDCM, Chingsubam Manglemton Meetei spoke on the issue pertaining to the delay in inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in ST list.

Co-convenor of Youth wing STDCM, Chingsubam Manglemton Meetei stated that giving ST status to Meetei/Meitei  is the only way to save the indigenous people.

He said that as Meetei/Meitei is currently included in the general category immigrants have already started buying land and fighting elections which will eventually result in the end of the community.

Stating that there are protests in different parts of India demanding ST status, he informed that Odisha Chief Minister has submitted a memorandum to the Centre for inclusion of 160 communities in ST list.

Manglemton urged that the state government should also take the initiative for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list. He said that most of the communities in the North East have been included in the ST list. Informing that a People’s Convention will be organised on October 13, Manglemton appealed to the people, clubs, Meira Paibis, student organisations and CSOs to take part in it and support the long pending demand.

A sit-in-protest was also held at Nambol Keithel in collaboration with the United Voluntary Organization and Nambol Apunba Nupi Lup. Similar protest was held at Khundrakpam Awang Leikai organised by Youths’ Progressive Organization, Nupi Lup & Women Welfare Association, at Laingoubi, Bpr district organised by Khoijuman Tabi& Kula Pat Apunba Meira Paibi Lup and also at Waheng Leikai organised by WAMA on Saturday.
