IMPHAL: Chief Minister N Biren was visibly furious when he found the trees planted 15 years along the AH-1 from Koirengei to Sangakpham dried while re-constructing the median supports.
On Saturday, Chief Minister inspected the ongoing construction work of the Asian Highway 1 from Koirengei to Sangakpham taken up M/S Shivalaya Construction Pvt Ltd.
Notably, the trees were planted in 2004 as a part of Green Imphal campaign when Chief Minister N Biren was minister of state Forest and Environment. The trees were planted with the objective of fighting pollution in the city and fighting climate change. However, the grown trees were uprooted in the construction work of the highway by the M/S Shivalaya Construction Pvt Ltd.
Biren during his inspection visit found many trees along the median dried up. The situation came to light when he was returning from a personal work. The sight of the dried trees along the highway aggravated the Chief Minister who chastised the engineers and contractor for their irresponsibility.
Biren also reprimanded the Engineer of the Highway Division, PWD as to why they failed to look after such wrongdoings and expressed displeasure with the concerned officials over delay in construction work of the national highway from Khongnang Ani Karak to Koirengei.
