IMPHAL: The Manipur State Shumang Leela Council (MSSLC) has held a state level memorial service to grieve at the sudden demise of the well known Shumang leela artist Sarungbam Rajen of Wangoi Wahengbam Leikai and pay floral tributes.
Speaking at the gathering, lifetime secretary of the council Sougrakpam Hemanta spoke on the contributionof Rajen and listed Chatledo Eidi, Nakhoigi Hayengkidamak, Ningol Pokpi and Kheba Chingi Napomda as some of his popular plays. Highlighting his career Hemanta mentioned that Sarungbam Rajen was the recipient of many awards for his noteworthy performances.
He continued that the council has initiated holding of condolence services at the state level when an artiste expires so as to enable fellow artistes to convey their sorrow and pay respect to the departed soul by offering floral tributes. The core idea is to strengthen the fraternity of Shumang Leela as well as to promote the art form, he stated.
During his speech he mentioned that Shumang Leela also plays an important role as an efficient medium in cleansing the ills infesting the society and urged the government on behalf of the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council to implement welfare schemes for its artistes in meeting their medical needs.
The function was attended by PadmaShri Naba Wareppa, lifetime president of the council Ph. Gunachandra Sharma, NSD alumni Kshetrimayum Jugindro, advisor of the council L.Tarpon and president of the council M. Purnimashi Leima as presidium member of the function.
