THOUBAL: The Social And Educational Welfare Association ( SEWA) Hayel Labuk, Thoubal District, has strongly condemned the torture and alleged attempt to kill a young woman from Sangaiyumpham by her husband that came to light on June 20 last.

The association also urged the administration and other relevant authorities to book the culprit at the earliest in a release issued on Wednesday.

The release added that the members of SEWA had personally interacted with the victim and come to the conclusion that whatever they have heard was the truth. It was also learnt that the father of the husband namely Md.Abdur Rashid, a resident of Ngariyan Makak, Imphal East had been arrested, but not  the husband yet. SEWA is demanding the arrest of her husband, Md.Habibur Rahman at the earliest, the release mentioned.

It went on to narrate that the victim Sanatombi confessed that she was allegedly tortured by her husband repeatedly, in connivance with her two sisters-in-law and father-in- law at her husband’s house. The husband forcibly poured wine on her mouth and beat her several times, and the things she encountered were really acts of wildness and inhumanity, the release added. The relevant authority should arrest the husband and befitting punishment must be given to the perpetrators, the association demanded.

On the other hand, the women wing of Manipur Muslim Welfare Organization (MMWO) has strongly condemned the unnatural and ghastly incident of Sanatombi, daughter of Saffiruddin of  Sangaiyumpham, who was brutally assaulted by her husband.

As per the press statement of MMWO signed by the media co-coordinator Pukhrimayum Hajira, it was stated that the organization has drawn the attention of the government to punish the culprit Md. Habibur Rahaman, husband of the victim, and his family members in connection with the crime at the earliest as per the requirement of the law.

While the incidents of torturing and discriminating against women have become a very common occurrence in our society which have affected the mentality of women, pushing them into a state of fear and concern over their survival, she added.

The situation has also created to a certain degree hardship in bringing peace in the state due to the ineffectiveness of the women in the society. However, if the government takes up timely intervention now to book the criminal and dealt with them strongly as per the law then it will help in bringing down such crimes in the future, she added.

Further, the MMWO women’s wings media co-coordinator cautioned that it cannot be predicted that the nightmare which was experienced by Sanatombi would never happen to the members of another family and subsequently appealed to one and all cutting across community lines to cooperate and stand under one decision in order to find out the culprits for deliverance of justice.

The women’s wings assured its full support and cooperation to the joint action committee (JAC) formed in connection with the alleged torture of Sanatombi by her husband.
