Thoubal: A one day national seminar on “The aspects of Manipuri Language Development” was held at the conference hall of YK College Wangjing, Thoubal District on Friday. The seminar was held in connection with the observance of the “International Mother Language Day” which was celebrated across the World on Friday.
The seminar being sponsored by Directorate of University and Higher Education, Government of Manipur was organised and hosted by YK College Wangjing in collaboration with the two literary organisations from Wangjing namely Sahitya Parishad Thoubal District branch, Wangjing and Khorirol Sandok lup, Wangjing.
Giving his key note on the inaugural function of the seminar, Dr.Longjam Anand, convenor of the organising committee and assistant professor, head of Department of Manipuri department,YK College Wangjing, underlined that although there were more than six thousand languages in the world, most of them had been dead inspite of development, and added that it wasn’t an easy task to make a language developed.
He opined that there would be only two means for making a language to be developed ,first to have Graduate and Post Graduate for Manipuri medium, for that, there should be “Langauage Education Policy”, second, to get status of “The Manipur Official Language Act 1979 ” and use it as an “official language”, he added.
“A language will be developed only when it is used both in education and as an official language of the state, otherwise that language might be in the list of dead language”, he stated.
He further said that Manipuri language had been listed in the endangered language status by UNESCO. The seminar will focus on promoting awareness of linguistic and development of the Manipuri language, he added.
Principal of YK College, Dr.S.Giri, who presided over the event appealed all to protect and promote Manipuri language adding that protecting one’s language will progress the pace of development of the community in general and the State as whole.
It may be mentioned here that altogether 18 language scholars/ professors who are teaching language in different colleges of the state including 3 research scholars from Assam have presented different papers on the theme of language development. The seminar was moderated by four professors alternatively.
The seminar was attended by M.Rajendra, renowned poet and president of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Thoubal District branch, Wangjing as chief guest, while president of Khorirol Sandok lup Wangjing Tongbram Babulan was guest of honour respectively.
Many college teachers from across the state, students and research scholars also attended the seminar.
It may be recalled that UNESCO has chosen the theme “Languages without Border” for this year’s observance of the International Mother Language Day.
“The day has been being observed every year since 1952 under UNESCO to remember the movement for promotion of Bangla language by students of Dhaka University, Jagnath University and Dhaka Medical College.”
