Schools in state re-open after 320 day long shut down

TMB Report

IMPHAL: Having closed for almost 320 days due to Covid-19 pandemic, physical classes for students of Classes IX to XII and Colleges have commenced from today by maintaining Covid-19 Standard Operating system (SOP) (health and safety protocols) prescribed by the Government.

Though the first day of re-opening of schools saw thin attendance of students, teaching and non-teaching staff in schools were seen to be present fully.

In the greater Imphal area, students were seen attending schools and colleges with facemasks. Sanitisers and soaps were made available in the school campus. Before entering into their respective classes, the students were sanitized with hand sanitisers and soaps at the school entry gates. Inside the classrooms, sitting arrangements were maintained at a safe distance. For College, classes for students of first and fifth semester students also officially commenced from today.

Classes for students of Class X and XII were held in normal school timing while classes for students of class IX and XI were held in the morning shift.

Though Government schools reopened from today, most private schools chose to remain shut down despite the state government directive to re-open schools from today.

Notably, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the state government closed all the schools and colleges in the state since March 12, 2020 as a precautionary measure to prevent Covid-19 outbreak. After closure of the educational institutes, most schools and colleges opted for online classes that failed to fulfill the needs of the students.

With the Covid-19 situation improving in the state, though yet to be contained fully, state cabinet recently decided to re-open the schools and colleges from January 27 in view of the HSLC examination to be conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Manipur and Class XII examination to be conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur. Besides, the state government received suggestions from various walks of life to re-open the schools in view of the improving Covid-19 situation.
