IMPHAL: The Social Awareness Service Organization (SASO) has strongly condemned Assistant Professor, Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion of RIMS, Dr. K. Rachandra, for his discriminatory act towards an individual named Meitram Sanatomba from Sega Road.
In a press note signed by General Secretary SASO, it was alleged that the 42-year old Sanatomba was refused from donating blood after labeling him as a drug addict when he had visited RIMS blood bank on June 28, 2020 for voluntary blood donation as part of statewide camp to commemorate the 163rd anniversary of The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.
The incident had apparently taken a psychological toll on Sanatomba and consequently he has been suffering from depression, sleeplessness, fearfulness and other mental problems. Such an unimaginable act on part of a healthcare service provider will create an unhealthy environment and repeating the situation of early 90s when many drug users opted to remain hidden among the population in the state.
In conclusion the note said that such an act might demoralize many drug user communities who seek a positive change and meaningful participation of drug use response in the state. In this regard, SASO drew the attention of the RIMS authority not to repeat such acts and to stop projecting drug users in a discriminatory manner.
