Imphal: Around 20 sacks of betel leaves shipped into the state on air cargo from Guwahati was successfully apprehended by the volunteers of National Identity Protection Committee (NIPCO) at Imphal International Airport on Wednesday.
The seized sacks of betel leaves were later burnt down at the nearby Changangei Community Hall in the presence of volunteers of NIPCO and local meira paibi.
Speaking to media persons, NIPCO president Manihar appealed to the Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who is also holding the post of Home to check such business. Amidst the difficult Covid-19 pandemic, instead of importing such intoxicants things, they can import medical kits, equipment and deficient essential items.
He appealed to the state government, airport authority and others to be on alert to stop such shipments and curb the Covid-19 situation in the state.
