Imphal: Federal Students ‘Organisation Kangleipak (FESOK) has demanded the Chief Minister and the Education Minister to resolve the issue over the appointment of Vice-Chancellor of Manipur Technical University (MUC) beyond the norms of UGC and to make it clear who was appointed as the VC within seven days to resolve the issue at the earliest.
A press release issued by FESOK presented the enquiry report regarding the appointment of VC of MTU. The student body said that MTU has been imparting education to the students of Manipur and the institute has been spearheading in producing talented students in skill development.
However, appointing a VC beyond the norms provided by UGC in such a technical institution is a great concern for the future of the students and State. So, FESOK has conducted a detailed enquiry regarding the appointment of VC of MTU as there are many complaints on the issue, it said.
The student body said that no action has been taken by the authority concerned till date but the issue has badly affected the academic atmosphere of the university.
Saying that the root cause of the issue has risen after Prof Laiphrakpam Tombi Singh retired on October 29, 2020 after serving for three years, it said that later Commissioner of Higher & Technical Education M Harekrishna was appointed as VC in-charge. After that, Prof L Tombi was re-appointed as the VC of the university, it added.
The release stated that the issue rose after Chancellor of MTU and Governor, La Ganesan appointed Dr Tongbram Bhabeshwor as the VC on November 8, 2021 although he did meet the required criteria of 2018, UGC Regulation Section 7.3.0 and FESOK demanded resolution of the issue within three days.
Claiming that Dr Tongbram Bhabehwor did not meet the criteria of VC, the student body alleged that he had forged his documents and questioned whether there was no other person more eligible than him to become VC of MTU. FESOK further questioned if there is involvement of political influence regarding his appointment as VC.
Questioning the future of the education system in the State, FESOK has demanded the CM and Education Minister who had sworn to eradicate corruption from the State to resolve the issue within seven days.
