Thoubal: Demanding they be discharged from Waikhom Mani Girls College Thoubal Quarantine Centre and be home quarantined, inmates of the centre protested on Sunday morning ransacking several college properties including college gate.
It is said that the centre is an instituional quarantine centre opened under District Administration Thoubal. Altogether 32 inmates are quarantined there and they are demanding to be discharged for home quarantine.
It may be recalled here that on June 1, the same inmates had also protested and damaged college properties.
The reports recieved from the spot informed that those 32 inmates were all returnees from Delhi on May 18 and had been quarantined there from that day itself. Their period of quarantining was extended as 5 inmates from that centre got positive then. The inmates are afraid of extending quarantine period once more as another positive case was found on Sunday. So they are trying to run away from the centre and this led to the unfortunate incident of protest, the report added.
As police and medical staffs posted there could not control the situation, more police had to arrive at the spot and control the agitation.
It is said that of the 32 inmates residing there listed only 12 are from Thoubal District while the remaining 20 are from other districts.
There is also an unconfirmed report that they returned from Delhi by hook and by crook. Following the situation, the Deputy Commissioner Thoubal has allowed all the 32 inmates to be discharged after taking the permission from relevant authority.
