IMPHAL: The Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) has condemned the unacceptable act of the traditional attire of Manipur “Leirum Phee” being produced as an item entitled “Modi Gamsha” by a handloom unit located in Uttar Pradesh.
The statement was made by advisor of PPCM Longjam Memchoubi during a press meet held at its office on Saturday.
Longjam Memchoubi further said that the immediate intervention of the state government and concerned department is the needed to save the identity of the Leirum Phee which has been part of the culture and tradition of this land. The need for preservation is not confined to just the leirum phee and such the government also needs to recognize the various other culturally valued attires of Manipur, said L. Memchoubi.
Another advisor of PPCM Maibam Purnimashi Leima remarked that all original apparels used by us including those with traditional and cultural values need to be registered with the concerned department. It is said that the pride of Manipur like “Rani Phee” has been produced by outside company and sold at lower prices, she said and cautioned that this will affect our local weavers and bring them numerous difficulties.
She went on speak in relation to many lives having been claimed due to the wide outbreak of Covid-19 across the world till now. She said that till now Covid-19 vaccine that can fully cure the disease has not been discovered. Now, the need at this hour and responsibility of entire citizen is to be aware of not letting the spread of the disease within the community. So, we need to follow and maintain the rules and regulations or protocols issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), she added. She appealed to all stakeholders in the state to follow and maintain all the protocols and take own responsibility to be safe and protected from the disease.
