IMPHAL; Apart from stripping off the Chief Minister’s Medal for Gallantry, Manipur Government has suspended one Manipur Police Sub Inspector of Imphal east Commando for concealing the facts in connection with drug trafficking case pending against him.
Police Sub Inspector Bheishamayum Debson Singh was suspended after the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) on Sunday pointed out that B. Debson Singh, SI Imphal East commando had been arrested for trafficking of drug worth over Rs 3 crore in 2013 but was awarded CM’s medal for gallantry.
State Government lauded AMSU for bringing the matter to the notice of the government.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, government has withdrawn and cancelled the award of Manipur Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry to B Debson Singh, SI of CDO Imphal East based on preliminary enquiry and finding the allegation to be true. An enquiry has been instituted into the matter by a Committee headed by K. Radhashyem Singh, IGP(Int), Manipur to find out more details, said a statement issued by Joint Secretary(Home) on Sunday.
It also informed that Inspector, B. Roshan Singh, Reader to SP/Imphal East who was found responsible for lapses in the initial processing has been placed under suspension.
SP Imphal East has suspended Bheishamnyum Debson Singh, SI of CDO/IB for concealing the drug case pending against him, added the statement.
Earlier during the day, AMSU demanded a high level inquiry into the antecedents of all the police personnel who were conferred gallantry awards this year and to strip the award if any of them were found involved in heinous crimes like drug trafficking.
A press release of AMSU signed by its Publicity and Information Secretary Lhunpao Lupheng stated that the AMSU is outraged to see Bheishamayum Debson Singh, SI CDO, Imphal East, who was arrested for trafficking drugs worth more than Rs 3 crore in 2013 is awarded Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry for 2020.
It may be recalled that on 28 April 2013 Sub-Inspector Beishamayum Debson Singh of Singjamei Bheigyabati Leikai, Imphal East was arrested along with an 11-member team of the Manipur Police commando at Pallel on the way to Moreh carrying Respifed tablets and Pseudoephedrine tablets worth Rs. 3,64,02,000 in international market. An FIR number 62(4)2013 Kakching police station under Section 21/29 of the ND&PS Act and 27 Arms Act, AMSU said in the press release.
The same person Bheishamayum Debson Singh was listed in serial number 6 of the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry notified vide reference number 27/6/2020-H (CM-MEDAL) dated 12th August 2020, the AMSU pointed out.
He further stated that the AMSU cannot understand how the Chief Minister who eloquently elaborated on the issue of “War Against Drugs” during his official address on the Independence Day ceremony could confer a gallantry award to such police personnel caught red handed for drug trafficking.
