IMPHAL: Demanding the handing over of the Lhukhosei drug haul case to CBI and resignation of Chief Minister N Biren, a large number of workers of Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress on Friday came out to the street to stage a protest rally. However, police successfully foiled the rally at the gate of Congress Bhavan itself.

Hundreds of MPYC members gathered at Congress Bhavan, around afternoon and shouting slogans like “Resign Chief Minister”, “Hand over Zou Drug Case to CBI”, BJP Govt is Supporter of Druglords”, they came out towards the main street in a bid to take out a protest rally. Police teams already deployed there blocked the rally at the gate of Congress office where an intense standoff between the police and protestors took place. The police and the protestors exchange heavy war of words.

MPYC president Mahananda Nungleppam told reporters that the recent media report exposing the link of high profile persons with the druglord Lhukhosei Zou have triggered apprehension among the youths. The present Government is acting contrary to what it has committed to fight against drug menace.

In various meetings and functions, the chief minister promised to fight drug menace. Even the Government announced war on drugs. However, the Government is not sincere in tackling the drug issue, he added.

He demanded that the chief minister resign in order to facilitate a fair trial of the Lhukhosei Zou drug seizure case.
