THOUBAL: The Porompat Police on Thursday arrested Md. Habibur, 35, son of Md. Abdur Rashid, the husband of Sanatombi alias Sana on the charge of torturing and attempting to kill her, the information of which came to light on June 20.
Md. Habibur and Sanatombi had eloped on March 10 this year and their marriage was fixed on coming July 20. Sanatombi hails from Sangaiyumpham Part (I) Yangbi Leikai, Thoubal District.
Police arrested Md. Habibur from his residence located at Ngariyan Makak, Imphal East at around 10.30 am. His father had also been arrested earlier on Tuesday in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, the JAC formed in connection with the incident thanked the police team for timely action and also expressed hope that justice will be delivered according to the law without delay.
The Co- Convenor of the JAC Md .Fazur Rahman told media persons that the committee had postponed the proposed agitations that were announced earlier against the administrations indefinitely as a result of the arrest of the culprit husband. But, the JAC is still demanding that the rest of accused who were being involved in the said inhumane crime are also arrested, he added.
In the meantime, volunteers of Woman’s Action for Development (WAD) and Centre for Social Development (CSD) led by co-ordinator Takhelchangbam Nomita together visited the residence of the victim on Thursday.
The team interacted with the victim and strongly condemned the incident. The Co- ordinator Nomita urged the relevant authorities to book all the perpetrators who are involved in the heinous crime against woman. The police should submit the chargesheet of this case at the earliest so that justice can be availed in time, she added.
