IMPHAL: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) on Tuesday denounced and condemned the disrespectful attitude of Governor of Nagaland RN Ravi towards ‘our Naga freedom fighters with usage of the terminologies like ‘gangsters, ‘extortionists etc’ and also demanded RN Ravi to come out in the open and tell the Naga public as to whom he is referring to as gangsters and ‘extortionists in his letter to the Chief Minister and ‘if it as such then, it is a matter of shame that the mighty India has appointed a retired top-cop to sit down on the same negotiating table with gangsters and extortionists,.
In a press release NSF said that the Naga movement for self-determination is a mass based assertion for the Naga people’s legitimate rights to be respected by any forces that stand to oppose it. This century old people’s movement culminated in the Government of India officially recognizing the unique history and situation of the Nagas. The ensuing political dialogue at the Prime Minister of India’s level to find a permanent solution to the vexed issue began 23 years ago and have thus far seen 3 statesmen of GOI were appointed interlocutors prior to RN Ravï’s appointment to the role, it pointed out. Much progress has been made on all fronts and we now stand at the threshold of a peaceful transition to a prosperous Nagalim after a solution that is honourable and acceptable to the Naga people is inked, the release said.
“However, there is absolutely no denying the fact that the adversaries of the legitimate people’s movement have been trying to derail everything that has been achieved thus far through prolonged political negotiations. It is a matter of great pride that the Naga people continue to stand their ground and weathered every storm that comes our way with patience and dignity.
That said, the recent letter of RN Ravi, Governor of Nagaland and GOI appointed Interlocutor to the Indo-Naga Peace Process to the Chief Minister of Nagaland which portrays the torchbearers of the Naga movement in bad light reveals the arrogant attitude and insincere approach of the GoI and their unwillingness to settle the issue. It also reeks of an attempt by the appointed symbolic head of the state to overthrow and overpower a democratically elected Government,’ added the release.
The NSF said that representing the aspirations of the Naga students’ and youths spread across four states and two countries it will not remain blind and mute to attempts by individuals to belittle and disregard our internationally recognized movement.
The release further stated that the federation has lost all hopes of an honourable and acceptable solution to the vexed Naga issue for as long as someone with such minimal understanding of the issue and disrespectful attitude is at helm from the Indian side. The federation shall not shy away from openly stating that RN Ravi himself has been responsible for the many hiccups in the peace-process in his attempts to earn some personal brownie points, charged the NSF.
The federation reminded RN Ravi that the GoI have officially recognized the Naga issue as a political issue and his every single attempt to downgrade it to a state law and order problem will prove futile. It is time that he takes his role as an interlocutor seriously or call it quit altogether for even with or without him, the aspiration of the Naga people shall continue to thrive, said the release.
