IMPHAL: A special meeting of the National people Party (NPP) Manipur state unit was held at its Sangaiprou office on Wednesday where the party minutely discussed about the political situation of the state including non-allotment of key portfolios such as Home, RD&PR, said sources.

NPP Manipur state president Thangminlen Kipgen, Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar, Health Minister L Jayentakumar, Minister N Kaysii and Minister Letpao Haokip attended the meeting which was held from 3J) PM till 4:00 PM.

The meeting of the party is treated crucial at such a time when the state is passing through a political uncertainty.

Although the exact details of the meeting is yet to be ascertained till filing of this report, it is speculated that the party might have discussed about non-allotment of key portfolios like Home, RD&PR etc to the NPP Ministers, despite assurance by the Central BJP leaders, added the source.

Notably, dissatisfied with the Biren Government, four NPP Ministers viz. Y Joykumar, L Jayentakumar, Letpao Haokip and N Kaysii on June 17 resigned and joined hands with Congress, keeping the coalition BJP led Government on tenterhooks.

To salvage the political crisis in the Government, BJP’s troubleshooter in the North East Himanta Biswa Sarma who is also convener of NEDA, NPP national president and also Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma plunged into action and took the four NPP MLAs to Delhi by a charter flight to meet BJP national Chief JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Following assurance from the BJP president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the 4 NPP MLAs will continue as ministers in BJP-led Government, the party MLAs again supported the Government. In the meeting, the national leaders reportedly assured that Home portfolio would be allotted to the Deputy CM Y Joykumar.

It may be mentioned that Deputy CM Joykumar has been a minister without any portfolio for months after he was stripped of Finance, Science and Technology and Economics and statistics by the Chief Minister. The only left with him is Civil aviation.

Despite the Central leaders’ assurance, Chief Minister N Biren did not allot him the Home portfolio. According to an order issued by Cabinet department on July 6, Finance, Science and Technology and Economics and statistics was allotted to the deputy CM.

After allotment of the portfolios, Deputy CM began attending his office since Tuesday.
