IMPHAL: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has decided to re-open and start investigation into two attacks on former chief minister Okram Ibobi in 2016, both allegedly by cadres of the NSCN (IM).
The first attack was during a visit for the inauguration of Ukhrul District Hospital and Power sub-station when suspected cadres of NSCN (IM) opened fire towards Ibobi as he was getting out of his helicopter at Ukhrul. In the gunfire from the militants one escort personnel sustained injury and he returned to Imphal leaving the spot immediately. The attack took place on October 24, 2016.
In the other incident, the insurgent group laid an ambush and attacked security personnel during a visit of the then chief minister in Tengnoupal district eventually killing three security personnel on December 15 of the same year. Three police personnel killed were Yengkhom Jeevan of Thoubal Leishangthem Awang Leikai, Md Ayub Khan of Yairipok Ningthiunai and LS Lenghir Charanga of Kharam Khunou. The attack happened at Lokchao and Bongyang under Tengnoupal district.
The cases of attacks on O. Ibobi were submitted on 13/7/2020 at NIA Special Court, and therefore the agency has started investigating the case.
