Inscribe Meetei Mayek on Signboards within three Months: MEELAL

TMB Report

IMPHAL: Newly elected office bearers of Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) have been sworn in.

Titular Manipur King Leishemba Sanajaoba administered oath of office to 29 newly elected executive committee members of the organization at Sana Konung, Palace compound Imphal on Friday.

Speaking during the oath taking ceremony, Titular Manipur King Leishemba Sanajaoba lauded the contribution of MEELAL in preserving and propagating the indigenous script ‘Meetei Mayek’ in the state. Teaching of Meetei Mayek script upto graduate level in the colleges in the state is one of the greatest contributions of MEELAL.

Manipur, despite being a tiny state, is among the nations having its own distinct cultural heritage, language and script by which the state can survive with a pride. Although most nations in the world strive to preserve their own language and script, most people of the state seem to have ignored the significance of the indigenous script Meetei Mayek. Meetei Mayek script is not properly embedded in display boards and bill boards, lamented the King.

Stating that Meetei Mayek has been taught upto graduate level, the King appealed to the MEELAL to strive hard to ensure that students pursuing MA course do not face inconveniences.

MEELAL president Yanglem Biren said that all the books written in Bengali script need to be transcribed in  Meetei Mayek and made such books available to the people. Different noted books including Khamba Thoibi written by eminent writers need to be transcribed in Meetei Mayek. Students will face severe inconveniences if the books written in Bengali script are transcribed in Meetei Mayek, he said while drawing attention of the government in this regard.

He said that the organization has been demanding the government to replace the provision ‘Manipuri language written in Bengali script’ of the Manipur Official Language Act 1979 with Manipuri language written Meetei Mayek script. However, Government still ignores the demand. Several students are not allowed to write in Meetei Mayek script in various competitive examination due to failure on the part of the government to amend the act, he said and demanded the government to amend the act at the earliest.

Taking serious note of negligence of Meetei Mayek, he appealed to all the concerned to inscribe Meetei Mayek script bigger than the size of English words or sentences used on all kinds of banners, billboards and hoardings and other signboards in the state within three months.

The MEELAL also strongly condemned the incident occurred at Lilong Higher secondary school on the last day of Matric exam.
