IMPHAL: The 5th National Games was held in Manipur from February 14-25 in the year 1999. In that national games Manipur bagged the highest numbers of medals in different events with 49 gold, 24 silver and 39 bronze medals and grabbed the Raja Bhalendra Singh trophy for overall team championship.
The Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) in a press release further stated that as a token of encouragement and honouring the Manipur team, then chief minister Wahengbam Nipamacha had declared February 25 as Manipur Players Day and the day was observed since then. As a commemoration to all the dedicated players who participated at the national games, the MSF has come to observe the day in the past year. Likewise, the MSF appealed to all the people of Manipur to come forward unitedly to observe day this year again.
As a part of the Manipur Players’ Day, the MSF will be organizing an invitational football championship of six student’s organizations commencing from February 20-25 hosting by the MSF. In the upcoming football championship leaders and volunteers of six students’ organizations teams namely, AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK and AIMS will be participating. The championship will be a leagues match and semi-final match will be playing at DM University playground and the final match will be held at Maiba Khul Union Club (MKUC), MUC ground before the main observation of Manipur Players’ Day, 2020 is conducted on February 25, added the press release of MSF.
On the same day, an exhibition football match will be played between Manipur film artists and leaders of six students’ organizations. In this tournament, the All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) will be playing a big role. In conclusion, the press release of MSF appealed to all the people in State to extend help to organize the upcoming MSF invitational football championship with grand success.
