MSF observes XVI Student’s Martyrdom Day, 2020

IMPHAL: The Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) on Sunday observed the Students’ Martyrdom Day, 2020 at Tekhellambam Leikai TYC Ground, Kwakeithel in commemoration of the supreme sacrifice of Athouba Pebam Chittarannjan.

The presidium members, volunteers of different students’ bodies and well-wishers paid homage and floral tributes to the portrait located at the memorial complex of Athouba Pebam Chittaranjan, Bishnupur.

President of MSF Sazad Bhuiyamayaum said that after some years under British colonial, Manipur state got independence in the year 1947, which has already had its own constitution and administration but in the year 1949, Manipur was forcefully merged into India by the then Central Government. Since then, thousands of citizens have been protesting and shouting many democratic slogans against the India government.

He continued said that in order to calm down the situation, Manipur has been announced as a disturbed area and the Armed Forces Special Power Act, 1958 was enforced in the 20 sq km Imphal Municipal Corporation area in the year 1978.

The then government of India, in the name of saving the rights and sources, properties of Manipur, brutally tortured and even killed many leaders and volunteers of various organizations of that time. Under this draconian act, many people of the state were tortured and arrested, also killed without any trail, added Sazad Bhuiyamayum.

He further stated that right after AFSPA was enforced in the state, many frightening incidents and cruelty incidents have occurred. He mentioned the incident of Thangjam Manorama Devi who was arrested on July 14 in 2004 from her own house by Assam Rifles and was brutally tortured and killed. In connection with this incident, people of the state have launched different kinds of agitations against the then India government, he stated.

The MSF president also expressed that as a part of the agitations, Athouba Pebam Chittaranjan Mangang sacrificed his precious lives by setting himself on fire on India’s Independence Day with the objective to show that the entire people of Manipur cannot survive long in this situation.

He appealed to every citizen in the state to light a candle at their own residence in remembrances of Athouba Pebam Chittaranjan Mangang and also appealed to prepare for a further protest against the AFSPA, 1958.

President of Poirel Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Longjam Memchoubi, chairman Committee on Human Rights Manipur Phulindro Konsam, present of AMUCO Ph. Nando Luwang attended as the presidium members of the observation. Leaders and volunteers of different students’ bodies also attended the day.
