IMPHAL: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has requested the Centre and State Government to arrange a special train to evacuate the stranded Bihari migrant workers from the state.
Talking to reporters MLA Govindas Konthoujam said that AICC chairperson Sonia Gandhi recently announced that the party would bear the train fares for transporting the migrant workers, stranded and stuck in different parts of the entire country and also instructed the State Congress units to bear the needful expenditures for evacuating the migrant workers in their respective states. As instructed by the AICC, Congress MLAs in the state had minutely discussed the issue.
In view of the huge number of Bihari migrant workers being stranded in the state, the meeting decided to give priority to them in the first phase of the evacuation drive.
After the meeting, CLP leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, requesting the arrangement of a special train for the stranded Bihari migrant workers who could be evacuated from Jiribam railway station in Manipur. A copy of the letter was also made available to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and CLP leaders in Bihar seeking for a coordinated effort.
The Congress MLA was hopeful of support from the state Government to its effort to evacuate the aggrieved migrant workers stranded in the state due to nationwide COVID-19 lockdown.
Recalling that State Chief Secretary Dr J Sureshbabu had already announced that around 1200 Manipuri migrant workers, students being stranded in Bengaluru would be brought back home by a train, the MLA lauded the initiative of the Government , adding that Congress party has also been extending cooperation to the Government in such purpose.
CLP Spokesperson MLA K Meghachandra said that several stranded migrant workers are facing a hard life due to the lockdown. In view of their sufferings and grievances, Congress party decided to bear the travel expenditure of the migrant workers with the Government failed to take up any measure for them.
CLP was compelled to take up such initiative for the aggrieved migrant workers as state Government failed to take up any measure to evacuate the migrant workers from the state, Meghachandra said and appealed to the Centre and the state Government to extend cooperation to the Congress party in arranging a special train for the migrant workers.
Stating that Manipuri migrant workers and students being stranded in different states are also experiencing untold miseries due to the lockdown, the MLA said the party can no longer tolerate such sufferings of the people and urged the state Government to speed up its evacuation drive at the earliest in public interest.
He said that the train fare for the migrant workers is to be met by the contribution from the Congress MLAs, Congress workers and sympathisers.
