Imphal: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has held a protest demonstration against price hike, unemployment, Agnipath scheme, and imposition of GST on essential commodities at the gate of Congress Bhawan, BT Road.
The protest was held as a mark of solidarity to the nationwide protest by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Friday.
MPCC President K Meghachandra Singh, MLAs, party workers, office bearers of frontal/cells/departments, and other members shouted slogans during the protest. “Who stole fertilizers, it’s BJP, who spoiled the future of farmers and poor people, it’s BJP, down down BJP”, they shouted. They also held several placards that read “Withdraw GST on food products,” “Modi’s GST is Gabar Singh tax,” “Withdraw Agnipath scheme, instead give 2 crore jobs as promised”.
Afterwards, the protesters tried to march towards the Raj Bhavan and CM’s Bungalow when a confrontation ensued between the police and the MPCC members.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the protest, MPCC President K. Meghachandra Singh said that since the BJP led government came to power both at the Centre and the State, the people of the country have been suffering. He said that the protest was to show opposition to the incumbent government.
He expressed disappointment over the attempt of the government to suppress the democratic voice raised by MPCC by using a large number of police. The Congress strongly condemned the act of state police, he said. Meghachandra said that the party will continue to raise its voice for the welfare of the farmers and the common people against the BJP-led government in the state.
The MPCC leader railed against the state government and demanded fair game in politics. He appealed to the government to ensure democratic function of all government institutions and departments.
