MP Ranjan heartbroken after visit to forsaken tea estate

TMB Report

Jiribam: MP Dr RK Ranjan was given a big shock after seeing the dilapidated state of Jiribam Tea Estate which he went to visit on his return journey from Barak Valley on Sunday. The Superintendent of Police, Jiribam district accompanied him during the trip to the estate.

The MP who is an ardent fan of Manipuri tea that has been acknowledged as a very tasty variety by tea experts and had on numerous occasions lobbied with the Centre for promotion of tea cultivation in the state was awestruck at the vast expanse of overgrowth which was once the premise of the estate.

He said that the building was constructed at the time of MLA Ashangbam Biren and it was furnished with machines and dryers among others. Now, the present state of the JTE is very distressing, he added.

Tea is native to the place and its cultivation was predicted to be a natural success. The business could have made it possible to manufacture tea throughout the year as well as bring name for the state. Leaving this place as a forsaken mess is a great loss for the land and I am greatly touched by the present situation, he added.

He recalled having visited the place in 2014 as well as on other occasions in the past. Comparing the states of affair with his current visit he said the buildings and furniture that he saw then have been completely removed.

They have even brought down all the walls. The metal roofing, iron windows and parts of the dryers have been dismantled and stolen. How on earth is this a sign of people loving their motherland! he stated.

He said the Assam Tea Board was requested to revive the plantation of Manipuri tea in 2014 which was met with a positive response. Afterward when present Union Finance minister Nirmal Sitharaman was the trade and industry minister a similar proposal for revival of tea plantation in Manipur was submitted, Dr Ranjan stated.

On the other hand, the MP attended a reception of 48 new members of Jiribam BJP unit who had joined from other political parties.
