Thoubal: A rare Monitor Lizard was rescued and released at its habitat area at Taothong khunou, Imphal West on Friday.
Interestingly, as July 31 every year is being celebrated as “World Ranger Day”, the release event is very co- incidental too.
It is said that some animal lovers from Taothong Khunou, Imphal West under Lamsang Police Station had informed the Joint Co- Ordination Committee on Wildlife and Biodiversity that they had rescued a living Monitor Lizard and kept it in their custody.
As soon as the information was received, a team of JCCWB along with Forest staff timely rushed to the said spot and rescued the animal. Later the team released the poor animal at Lamdeng Nursery Site at around 6.30 pm, a member from JCCWB added.
JCCWB also acknowledged and expressed gratitude for the help rendered by Ksh. Bishwarup, Ksh. Maston, Ksh. Nicholas and Ch. Bobby also on saving the poor animal. It is with their intense and timely help that the animal could have been rescued, JCCWB added.
The team also appealed to the general public to inform the Forest Department or any other animal related organisation of the state whenever stranded animals or animals have been come across. This might help in saving the lives of our rare and precious wildlife animals and birds. There is no life if there are no wildlife animals and birds. The JCCWB has been conducting a series of awareness programmes on the conservation and preservation of wildlife animals and birds from time to time, the member said.
